Walk-in tub pros and cons
Last reviewed: July 2026
A walk-in tub is a big purchase with real benefits and real trade-offs. Here is the honest list on both sides, so you can decide with clear eyes.
The pros
- Low step-in threshold — you step over a few inches instead of a high tub wall.
- Built-in seat at a comfortable height, so you bathe seated.
- Grab bars and slip-resistant surfaces where you need them.
- Reachable controls and a hand-held shower.
- Keeps the option to soak — unlike a shower conversion.
- Optional comfort features such as a heated seat and air or water jets (we describe these as features, not treatments).
The cons
- Cost. $8,000–$20,000+ installed — far more than advertised "from $3,000" pricing. See the cost breakdown.
- Fill-and-drain wait. You get in before it fills and stay seated while it empties, which can feel cold and slow. Fast fill/drain helps but adds cost.
- Not for every mobility level. You still must be able to sit and stand safely and step over a low threshold.
- Resale. Replacing your only tub can matter to some buyers. See resale value.
- Insurance rarely pays. Original Medicare does not cover it; other routes require you to qualify. See Medicare.
Who it suits — and who should look elsewhere
A walk-in tub suits someone who values soaking and finds a standard tub hard to enter but can still sit and stand safely. If you mostly need a safe, simple way to wash, a tub-to-shower conversion is usually cheaper and easier. Estimate both with the cost calculator and the conversion estimator.
Common questions
What are the main disadvantages of a walk-in tub?
Are walk-in tubs worth the money?
Prices are estimates. Every bathroom is different, so a firm price comes only after an in-home measurement.
