Walk-in tubs with jets

Last reviewed: July 2026

Air and water jets are the most-added comfort feature on a walk-in tub. Here is how the two types differ, what they cost, and one funding catch to know first.

Air jets vs. water jets

These are comfort features. We describe how they feel, not medical outcomes:

What jets add to the cost — and upkeep

Jets typically add about $900–$2,000 to the tub and need a larger electrical circuit, which adds to installation. Jetted systems also need regular cleaning cycles to keep the lines clear. If you want the lowest cost and simplest upkeep, a soaker tub skips all of this.

The funding catch

If you plan to use the VA HISA grant, note that jetted (whirlpool) tubs are typically excluded — HISA funds the access and safety modification, not comfort features. A non-jetted walk-in tub, or a walk-in shower, is more likely to qualify. The same caution applies to reading any "covered" claim about a jetted tub.

Is a jetted tub worth it for you?

If you will genuinely use and enjoy the massage feature and are paying out of pocket, it can be worth the premium. If cost or upkeep is a concern, or you are relying on benefits, a soaker model is the simpler choice. Estimate both with the cost calculator.

Common questions

What is the difference between air jets and water jets?
Water (hydro) jets push warm water through nozzles for a firmer massage feel; air jets push warm air through many small holes for a gentler, bubbly feel. Some tubs combine both. They are comfort features — we do not make health claims about them.
Do jetted walk-in tubs cost more?
Yes. Adding air and water jets typically adds roughly $900–$2,000 to the tub, plus a larger electrical load. See the cost breakdown.
Does the VA cover a jetted walk-in tub?
Usually not. The VA HISA grant funds medically needed access modifications, and jetted (whirlpool) tubs are typically excluded. A non-jetted model is more likely to qualify — see VA benefits.

Prices are estimates. Every bathroom is different, so a firm price comes only after an in-home measurement.
